Don't Compromise A Good Home Theater Audio System

Dean Caporella

How many times have you sat in a theater and marvelled at the wonderful sound quality and wished you could have the same quality in your own home? This is an area many overlook when buying a home theater system. A good home theater audio system can be the difference between enjoying the full benefits of a movie; particularly an action flick, or just simply passing it over as just another film.

It's those extra sound effects a good home theater audio system picks up and puts out that "gets the blood racing." It makes the movie literall y come alive in your own living room and combined with the visual aspect, it's what movie watching should be all about.

So what do you look for in a good quality home theater audio system? Well, it's a good idea to try before you buy. When shopping for an audio system, don't just take the salesperson's word for it; test it out!

The quality of a system’s performance is something that could either provide you with a great experience in your home or become a nightmare with crackling and poor sound management. A good idea is to take your own material with you, like a favorite CD or DVD, and check out how it sounds on the speakers you might be taking with you. Most salespeople will have no problem with that if it means they may have a sale on their hands.

Give The Sub Woofer A Work Out!

Next, push the subwoofer to its limit. The subwoofer is the speaker that will rattle your floor and take the sounds of your favorite movie to your bones. You need a subwoofer that is capable of breaking glass and the best way to find that out is to test it out, again, in the store. Push the limits, grab your Star Wars DVD, and make sure that all of those great space battles sound phenomenal through the subwoofer. Any rattling of glass on the windows is a good sign.

Did You Know?

Do you realise how far we have come with movie sound? When you consider in the early days, a method known as sound on disc; this involved a record player ( a record what?...yes I know ) which basically synchronized film sound by having control over the speed of a projector. How things have changed!

Know Your Theater Room

Make sure you know your home theater room. Get familiar with the specifications and measure them out to be sure. You don’t want to end up with a speaker that is too large for the room or with a positioning problem because of lack of space. You also don’t want to end up with too few speakers that provide you with a spaced out sound. Everything has to be just right, and in order to get everything just right, you need to plan and practice your plan of attack on the enemy of great sounding equipment.

One final thing...keep your home theater audio system relatively simple. Your ultimate aim is to get great sound. Anytime I'm in a store looking for a system, the salesperson is continually trying to sell me the latest "bells and whistles." These are extras on top of what I already require. Before you know, you need a degree in home theater audio systems to put the thing together. My advice, keep it simple.
