Home Theater Speaker - How To Set Up Home Theater Speakers

JD Dean

Setting up your entertainment show piece is more than simply finding the right television. It's about TV viewing distance, furniture placement and of course, the home theater speaker.

A good home theater speaker can make all the difference to enjoying your little piece of entertainment paradise. Cinema sound is on most people's wish list and undoubtedly, you'll be thinking about a quality sound system.

Naturally, brands such as Bose will spring to mind and with the advancement in technology today, it's normal to want the best. Bose have their Lifestyle 48 Home Entertainment Systems which can set you back almost $4000 while they have other systems such as the Lifestyle V30 and Lifestyle 38 & 35 IV home entertainment systems for about $3000.

Yes, they are excellent sound systems but before you rush out and spend your hard earned cash, you need to understand a little more about the home theater speaker. Do you understand speaker types.

Sub Woofers

The sub woofer is the mainstay of your home theater speakers. The sub woofer is the speaker that takes you to another place, the speaker that allows you to actually physically feel the sound, and the speaker that rumbles your seats when those huge Star Wars battle scenes hit your screen. The sub woofer produces the lowest of audible frequencies in your home theater setup. In other words, the sub woofer handles all the bass.

Then there are your main speakers. They take care of the high end sound. This speaker is responsible for carrying the dialogue or major sounds whereas the other speakers in your surround sound speaker setup will carry the attributing sounds that help bolster the overall effect of having a “wall of sound”.

Placing Your Speakers

We've spoken about TV viewing distance. Speaker placement is vitally important in getting the most from your home theater experience. Always follow the instructions for connections and cable wiring as we wouldn’t want to burn the house down due to improper installation.

Room shape is extremely important. If you've chosen an established room then you may have to consider some modifications but with the help of a quality consultant then you can overcome any issues. The room make up can either help or hinder the effects of your surround sound setup, as with the acoustics of the room.

Test your speakers. Set them up and see if your getting the sound you're looking for. Simply keep moving them around and adjusting them until you're happy with the output you're getting as well as the placement you're looking for.

Here are some important home theater speaker rules you should take note of:

- place the sub woofer near the television either to the right or to the left
- place the front channel (or main speaker channel) directly in front of the listening area. This speaker carries most of the main sound.
- place the left and right main front speakers on the corresponding sides of the front channel. A good idea is to elevate these speakers.

Extra adjustment may be required but remember, it's your home theater experience. Don't set up your speakers to satisfy someone else's taste. It's your ear you should concentrate on so it's you that needs to be satisfied with the end product.
