Home Theater Audio http://hometheaterinfoline.com/home-theater-audio/ http://hometheaterinfoline.com/home-theater-audio/#comments Sun, 31 Jan 2010 17:51:17 +0000 HomeTheaterInfoLine http://hometheaterinfoline.com/?p=59 Account limit of 2124 requests per hour exceeded.

ome after a hard day at the office and all you want to do is disappear into your home theater and travel off into a far away galaxy with your favorite Star Trek crew. Well, I don't know about you but I certainly do. And the part I look forward to is beefing up my home theater audio.

You know, home theater audio is a wonderful thing. It can literally take the roof off your home if you are not careful. Just watching Captain Picard and his merry band of Star Trekkers with the home audio theater vibrating at warp 9 levels just sends yours truly into entertainment heaven. Of course my walls are well sound proofed and my better half isn't home. So what do you want in a home theater audio system?

Most people want a home theater audio system that can rumble the floor with thunderous bass and can expose even the smallest details of sound with crystal clear sound quality. Finding equipment that does that properly is possible but can be complicated. It can certainly be a hassle when it comes to selecting the right equipment and, most of all, paying the right price for it.

A wide variety of the newer home theater systems offer a “home theater in a box” setup that integrates all of the aspects of your home theater system in one “box”. One or two boxes usually contain everything you need in terms of setting up your own perfect home theater experience, audio included. However, home theater in a box isn’t for everyone and some people prefer the old fashioned “build your own” method of theater arrangement. Knowing what you want out of a sound system is important, especially before going into the store.

First, listen to the speakers. There is no greater test for a good sound system than your own ears and what they’re looking for out of it is what you want out of your home theater audio. It is often recommended, and more stores allow this, that you take your own CDs or DVDs with you so that you can listen to the speakers using material you are familiar with. Go ahead and blast that Metallica if it helps!

Second, take size into account. There is no point in buying a sound system that will crowd the room. It is important, instead, to gather aesthetics in your point of view and try to plot out the home theater system room the best you can before you start shopping for huge speakers. The sound can be affected greatly by the amount of other objects in the room and the crowding, so it isn’t just because it might be ugly. Space makes a difference.

It's important to remember that in the end, what home theater audio system you decide on must satisfy you. There's no point in installing something because it's what someone else likes. You have to visualise yourself enjoying your dream home theater audio and then manifest it into reality by writing down the particular features you want before heading to your favorite outlet to give it a test run. It's your money; spend it wisely.

I'm writing this guide after being asked a few times on ways to connect a laptop to a TV. People want to achieve this for several reasons. First, it's great for presentations at work, school, or home. It's also convenient for viewing pictures and videos to friends, watching DVDs, and it is now even being used for viewing Blu-ray and other high definition content on the HDTV.

First, we want to make sure you're getting the most out of your laptop when it comes to displaying it on the TV.

  • If you have an HDTV with HDMI inputs, check if your laptop has an HDMI output. If it does, you're in luck! Your HDTV can display from your laptop in HD resolutions. All you need is an HDMI cable to connect them. If your HDTVs HDMI inputs are used up already. An HDMI switch would be the best solution for you. We supply switches that can connect up to 5 different HDMI sources to 1 HDMI input.
  • If you don't have an HDMI output on the laptop, check if it has a DVI output. Some ASUS, and Dell laptops have them. If you do, you can connect your laptop to an HDTV with an HDMI to DVI cable. They are both digital cables so this will produce the same HD resolutions as a standard HDMI cable.
  • If your laptop doesn't have HDMI or DVI out, it should have a VGA output. Connecting with VGA is capable of high resolutions. However, different TVs support different resolutions with VGA. You must check the maximum resolution your TV model supports with VGA.
  • Pretty much all laptops come with an S-Video output. It's not going to be as great of a picture, but it will certainly do the job with an S-Video cable.

After you have connected your chosen cable, boot up your laptop and see if it has detected your TV. If not, you have to go into your display properties and look for the settings that will enable your TV to display from your laptop. Where to find the setting will vary depending on your graphics card (just look around). If you are having trouble getting your TV to show a picture, make sure you have updated the display drivers on your laptop. Now you're probably going to want sound from something other than your laptop speakers. So you can choose to output it to your TV, or blast it from your home theater audio receiver.

  • The best way to connect audio to your TV or receiver is through a digital audio cable. Both a digital coaxial cable or Toslink optical audio cable will work great for crisp high quality audio. Just make sure your laptop has either a digital coaxial or an optical audio output. Some laptops use the headphone jack to double as a digital coaxial (S/PDIF) output. If you use this method, your going to need a 3.5mm to RCA adapter with a digital coaxial cable. If your laptop has none of these outputs and you still really want that high quality sound. Don't worry! You can still get an external (USB) sound card that has digital coaxial out or optical out. I recommend the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 SB1090 with Toslink Optical audio out.
  • Another way, which won't require any add-ons, is to use the headphone (3.5mm) jack on your laptop to the RCA (red and white) inputs on your TV or receiver. To do this, all you need is a 3.5mm to 2 RCA adapter with a 2 RCA audio cable.

I know all of these cables can seem confusing to you. If you're having trouble finding out what each cable looks like or find out more about a cable, check out the Cable Guide at CableTrain.com. All of these cables are available for you on our website as well. I hope you can now successfully connect your laptop to the TV in the best way possible!

What kind of TV will NOT become black, no matter the position of the TV or the angle of the viewer?

I have a small flat screen in my current office. At certain angles (me or the TV) the picture is almost black. I spend more time trying to get this small flat-screen at the "right angle" to be even a bit viewable, than I do watching it. I do NOT want to invest in a big TV for our new master suite or even a smaller TV for our bathroom that will not be visible at certain angles. Both will be on a swivel arm - that will be mounted on a wall. Mostly, I do not want to have to adjust the TV (other than moving the arm towards the direction of the room I am sitting in) - to be able to see the TV.

LCDs are the one with viewing angle problems, but the screen is "washed out" not black.

In any case, get a Plasma and you will be fine.

Many who own an iPod agree that they cannot live without it; this is why a home theater with iPod dock is so popular now. It lets you take advantage of high quality audio and video but you don't have to plug yourself into the machine by way of earbuds.

Your close family and friends will be thrilled to see how well the ipod works with the home theater system and will enjoy sharing anything that is on the hard drive. A favourite ipod is the fifth generation ipod which allows displaying videos and photos - this one is perfect to use with your home theater system. You can watch music videos downloaded from Apple itunes. The best part is, if you have a large TV screen, a group of your loved ones can enjoy seeing the family photos and relive the old memories they invoke.

To use these features you will need a home theater with iPod dock. This is actually an audio/video dock for the ipod itself. This device connects to your existing home theater and allows the two devices to 'talk' to each other. Your home theater systems remote control can also control your ipod once you are docked. This allows you to view tracks on your ipod play list. The dock also charges your ipod so, actually you are doing two things at once.

Although the latest iPods are very compatible with your home theater the older ones can also work quite well. The music from your iPod can be played through the home theater system making your experience even more pleasurable. You can easily use your home theater receiver to access your favorites and play list. If your home theater has audio enhancements such as Dolby Pro Logic II, the music from your iPod will be greatly enhanced too.

For a truly great audio and video experience make sure to get a home theater with iPod dock. That way you can enjoy the favorite tunes that you carry around with you when you get home at night as well. Plus there's the added bonus of your enhanced home theater audio. You'll have the best of both worlds!

Want to combine your home theater with iPod dock? Find out how at http://www.hometheaterroomsdesign.com.

The speaker setup in a home theater audio system is crucial to an entertainment center's performance in your household. A lot of experts agree that the ideal speaker setup should try to avoid ceiling installation for the primary three front speakers. Additionally, these speakers should be angled with a proper mounting bracket, if they have to be set up above ear level.

You should also avoid buying cubed speakers which may cost lesser but are less than ideal as part a home theater audio system. These little black or white cubes are also less likely to be compatible with your entertainment room's aesthetics, and you can easily find speakers that integrate better with interiors.

If you already have cubed speakers, you still can make the most of these home theater audio system components. First, ensure that these speakers are connected to their corresponding bass module connections. Then, check if each speaker level connection from the bass module is linked to the corresponding receiver connection (i.e. left rear to left rear; center channel to center channel). Also, have an RCA cable from the sub out of the receiver be connected to the sub in of the bass module.

After this, you will have to set in the receiver's bass management all of the speakers to "Large" and the subwoofer to "Yes". With these steps, an appreciable performance could be derived from your cubed speakers, but consultation with your dealer or the speaker manufacturer may still be needed when these procedures fail or you are in doubt of any of the connections made.

If your main purpose is to use an LCD display as computer monitor, the additional cost of the features of an LCD television, such as a built-in analog or HDTV tuner, analog AV and HDMI inputs, and other features needed for television-like performance, may be extra things you may not need.

In addition, if you are a gamer or have your PC integrated into your home theater system, and want the largest possible monitor to play on and show off to your friends, a 30-inch LCD television can be a very impressive computer monitor. If you are planning to use your LCD TV as both a television and computer monitor, make sure the unit you're considering does have VGA or other connection options designed for PC use.

If you're planning to have one, there are a lot of models available in the market today. Here are some of the top and hot LCD's in the market:

Sony Bravia KDL-40V2500 40-inch 1080p LCD Television.

The Sony KDL-40V2500 is a 40-inch 16x9 LCD television with a native pixel resolution of 1920x1080 (1080p) and a real world contrast ratio of 1,300:1. This set also includes 2 HD-Component and 2 HDMI video inputs, as well as a PC monitor connection. NTSC, ATSC (HDTV), and QAM tuners are also included. The ATSC tuner allows reception of the over-the-air HDTV signals and the QAM tuner allows Digital/HD-cable (non-premium channels) reception. The detail, color consistency, and contrast, on this LCD television is great. Check out the Sony KDL-40V2500, especially if you have a Blu-ray, HD-DVD, or upscaling DVD Player.

Samsung LN-T4665F 46-Inch LCD Television.

The Samsung LN-T4665F has some impressive specs, including a large 46-inch screen, 1080p input and processing, 15,000 dynamic contrast ratio, and an 8ms response time. However, it is real world performance that counts; this television delivers a great image with good color and contrast. The LN-T4665F also includes NTSC/ATSC/QAM tuners, which allows reception of analog, HDTV, and unscrambled digital and high definition cable signals. Another practical feature is the placement of the 3 HDMI input connections, 2 of which are mounted on the rear panel and one that is side panel mounted. If you don't have a home theater audio system, the LN-T4665 offers SRS TruSurround audio processing. Another practical feature is a built-in swivel stand.

Westinghouse Digital TX-42F430S - 42-Inch LCD Television

The Westinghouse Digital TX-42F430S 42-Inch LCD flat panel television offers (1920x1080) 1080p capability at a very affordable price. In addition to 1080p processing and input capability, this set features 4 HDMI, 2 sets of high definition capable Component Video inputs, a hi-res VGA PC monitor input, and both Analog and HDTV tuners. The TX-42F430S delivers great image quality, however, with a 1000:1 contrast ratio, black levels are not as deep as on many higher-priced LCD sets. On the other hand, if you are looking an affordable large screen LCD set, the TX-42F430S is definitely worth consideration, especially if you subscribe to HD-Cable, or own a Blu-ray Disc or HD-DVD player.

Sharp LC-52D92U 52-Inch LCD Television

If you are looking for a large screen flat panel television, and aren't impressed with Plasma, check out this LCD flat panel set from Sharp. The LC-52D92U comes in with a 52-Inch screen size, but only weighs about 93 lbs. However, don't buy this set simply for the large screen and light weight, consider the great 1080p image quality bolstered by a 3,000:1 contrast ratio, 120HZ screen refresh rate, and impressive 4ms response time. This set also includes both NTSC and ATSC tuners for reception of analog and digital TV signals. The LC-52D92U also has 3 HDMI inputs as well as a dedicated DVI input. If you want to get the most out of an Upscaling DVD, Blu-ray Disc, or HD-DVD player, the Sharp LC-52D92U may just be the ticket.

Westinghouse LVM-42W2 42-Inch LCD Monitor

With many LCD Televisions offering 720p (1280x720 or 1366x768) native pixel resolution, an LCD monitor with (1920x1080) 1080p capability, especially with for screen sizes larger than 40-Inches in screen size and a street price of less than $2,000. In addition to 1080p processing and input capability, the LVM-42W2 features 6 HD inputs, including 1 HDMI , 2 DVI-HDCP, 2 Component, and a hi-res VGA PC monitor input. The LVM-42W2 delivers great image quality for the price and is definitely worth consideration, especially if you have a Blu-ray Disc or HD-DVD player. Note: An external tuner, such as a Cable or Satellite Box, is required to receive standard or HDTV signals. Some of these LCD's are designed to be use as a pc monitor and will automatically reconfigure itself when connected to a pc.

Many people are looking to upgrade their home audio, without having to upgrade their home! The reality is a lot of audio equipment tends to take up quite a bit of space in the average home, so if you need to economize on space, but still want superior sound, bookshelf speakers are probably the best option available for you.

The best part of these speakers is that they can provide the same kind of technology of full size large floor speakers, without the size! They are designed to fit within the dimensions of a standard bookshelf, so that they can actually be stored their without taking up much room. Another reason why these kinds of speakers are popular is that they cost much less than their full size counterparts, so if you are on a tight budget, but do not want to compromise quality; these small speakers are the way to go.

Bookshelf speakers work by utilizing what are called driver technologies, in order to have the same sound impact as large speakers. They tend to work best in small to mid sized rooms, and can still provide all the richness and detail that large speakers can. Bookshelf speakers tend to be more popular for small apartments, a den, or a smaller bedroom. They can also be used as component speakers in a full home theater audio system. This is because they can be placed strategically throughout a room for great surround sound without being noticed!

As mentioned, the driver technology is important, as well as the speaker housing, which should be designed to minimize sound distortion. Many bookshelf speakers come with technology to help balance the sound between highs, mids, and lows, in order to achieve a smooth, consistent sound, whether you are listening to music or movies with tons of sound effects.

Many bookshelf speakers often come with both tweeters and woofers included, that help to balance sound further, and handle the higher and lower frequencies with ease. Using this type of technology will help the sound coming from the speakers be extremely clear.

Other features to look for include magnetic shields so that speakers can be placed near video equipment without ruining it. A bass port can also be useful, especially for listening to music or sound effects with powerful bass effects.

Bookshelf speakers are truly the ideal solution for many audio needs. Keep in mind that they tend to work best in smaller spaces, and if you ever do decide to upgrade your home, they can still be utilized in a more extensive audio system.

You can find valuable information on my website regarding bookshelf speakers and various Polk speakers. If you're interested in buying Polk audio speakers than I suggest that you take a look at an article I wrote about Polk audio bookshelf speakers.

How do I mount my surround sound speakers to the wall?

Our basement was recently refinished and I bought the Sony Surround Sound Speakers (Model SW576). The walls are already wired for surround sound with the speaker cables in a plate coming out of the wall at the rear and front of the room. Do I need to buy brackets to hold the speakers in place, how much are they, and if I do need to buy brackets, what do I do with the wall plate that has the speaker wire coming out of them. Also, if you can suggest a reasonable price and place to buy them, that would be awesome too. Thanks in advance.

If your speakers aren't too heavy, http://www.monoprice.com has some very reasonably priced brackets. I've used them in my own theater.

As far as the wall plates. what I did was mount the brackets as close to the wall plates as I could, so the speakers would hide most of the plate. You could also try painting the plate the same color as the wall. Do not try mounting the brackets to the plates, as they (the plates) will very likely break.

Surround Sound Home http://hometheaterinfoline.com/surround-sound-home/ http://hometheaterinfoline.com/surround-sound-home/#comments Thu, 03 Dec 2009 05:24:28 +0000 HomeTheaterInfoLine http://hometheaterinfoline.com/surround-sound-home/ Account limit of 2124 requests per hour exceeded.

In-wall surround sound speaker is one of the different types of in-wall speakers. In-wall speaker are an ideal solution for those who want to enjoy music by keeping their speakers hidden. In contrast to conventional speakers, an in-wall speaker offers many benefits such as cost effectiveness, compatibility, easy installation, and flexibility. Further, it does not occupy any floor space and can be placed across any flat surface including ceilings. It is most suitable in multi-room settings. Other names for in-wall speakers are in-ceiling speaker and recessed ceiling speakers.

A recent addition in the field of in-wall speakers, in-wall surround sound speaker systems form a perfect match for your home décor. The primary purpose of an in-wall surround sound speaker is to enhance home theater audio system, thereby providing non-intrusive enjoyment by keeping the speakers invisible. Its advantages, among many others, are high quality, outstanding performance, perfect sound, space saving, easy placement, sleek design, and versatility. In-wall surround sound speakers are most ideal in a home theater environment.

In-wall speakers with surround speaker system can be referred to as an audio system that involve the application of subwoofers, volume controls, cables, and two or more speakers including a rear speaker. Generally, surround sound speaker systems are available in two designs: monopole and bipole. Matrix sound and discrete sound are among the prime technologies employed for the performance of surround speaker system.

In-wall surround sound speaker system also has some disadvantages. Since it has static position, in-wall surround sound speaker systems sometimes lead to poor accuracy. Further, its installation cost is high. Another factor that affects the proper functioning of in-wall surround sound speakers is diffraction loss.

At present, a range of in-wall surround speakers coupled with advanced technologies are available according to the budget, need, and style of the customers.

In Wall Speakers provides detailed information on In Wall Speakers, In Wall Speaker Review, In Wall Speaker Wire, In Wall Speaker Systems and more. In Wall Speakers is affiliated with Portable DVD Player Cases.

What do I need to power up my subwoofer for my home surround sound?

I have a receiver that doesn't supply any power for my subwoofer.. Just wondering what I need to look for to power it up and about how much it costs?
The surround sound speakers were from my last dvd player/av receiver so it was powered from that. I got a new AV recv that was separate from the dvd player and I didn't realize it didn't supply power to the subwoofer.

check if it has a plug to go in the wall because it probably has a built in amplifier, like most large amps

I need program code for a One for All URC-6690 to work with a RCA RT-2500 Home Theater Audio Video Receiver.?

Try this link:

http://www.ofausa.com/list_codes.php?db_value=access4&remote_choice=URC6690

The One-For-All website lists all of the commands for it's series of remotes.

Unfortunately, your remote does not list codes for 'Receivers', so it may not be pre-programmed to control this unit. You should be able to program it to operate your TV, VCR, DVD, Satellite or Cable box using the codes on this link.

Your remote also appears to be capable of 'learning' new codes. You will need your manual, unfortunately there is no manual available from this website.

In recent years, there has been a respectable surge in the popularity of "unplugged" performances. Such exhibitions, as one might assume from the name, feature artists in small venues performing acoustically for small audiences. One interesting aspect to these performances is that sometimes the artists perform on electric guitars without using amplifiers. The irony, of course, is that electric guitars were specifically designed to be able to use amplifiers so that the music could be heard.

We appear to have come full circle. An unplugged performance, I would hypothesize, is an attempt by both the artist and the audience to "get back to the music." And there's certainly nothing wrong with that. But the reason both the venue and the audience are small is that if they were not, no one would be able to hear anything. The fact remains that electric guitars are designed to be used with amplifiers. If they're not, it is very difficult to hear what is being played because (most) electric guitar bodies are solid, rather than hollow like that of an acoustic instrument. So while unplugged performances may have artistic merit, they fail to make use of one of the electric guitar's most potent and important assets: the amplifier.

A guitar amplifier is simply an electronic amplifier designed for use with an electric guitar. An electronic amplifier, in turn, is a device designed to increase the power and amplitude of a signal. In this case, that signal is received from the guitar. Guitar amplifiers have been around since the early 1930s. At that time and through the 1940s, Hawaiian music was all the rage and amplifiers were used primarily with the lap steel guitar Hawaiian guitar. Then in the mid-1950s, thanks to the rock and roll revolution, the electric guitar took off and so did its amplifiers. Old black and white American Bandstand episodes show artists performing on stages that are subtly edged with the amplifiers attached to the electric guitars. But it didn't stop there. During the next decade, the artists began to experiment with distortion that could be caused by deliberately overloading their amplifiers. This eventually led to the incorporation of preamplifier distortion controls, which almost qualify guitar amplifiers as musical instruments in their own rights. Certainly it has become impossible to imagine modern music without the use of these devices.

Today, most guitar amps come in two general types. The first is the combination, or "combo," amplifier, which contains the amplifier head and guitar speakers in a single unit. The amplifier head contains the electronic circuitry constituting the preamp, built-in effects processing and power amplifier. The other type of amplifier is comprised of two separate speakers joined by cables. In this form, the amplifier head is housed in one unit while the guitar speakers are in the other. The unit with the head is commonly placed on top of one or more guitar speakers.

Among the two general types of amps, there are a number of different subcategories favored by different genres and instruments. Traditional amps, known for their clean, warm sound, are often used by rock, blues, country, indie and alternative bands. Hard rock-style amps, as the name intimates, are used by hard rock, metal and punk artists and often include a number of distortion effects and preamp controls. Bass amps boast extended bass response and tone controls that optimize a bass's sound. Finally acoustics amps, an apparent contradiction in terms, are designed to be used with acoustic instruments that have built-in pickups or microphones.
