So you have decided to purchase a home theater system. You know what you want and how much you're willing to spend. Have you given much thought to some of the basics? Certainly the centerpoint of any home theater set up is the television.

After all, it's what you're going to be looking at. The television needs to fit in with the surrounding confines. Have you thought about what size television you want? Will it fit your home theater room nicely? Considerations like these must be uppermost in your mind because depending on the size of your room, the television must be the appropriate size to fit within the dimensions of your home theater.

Home Theater Buying Tips

Here's a tip; before you head to your home movie theater outlet, learn as much about home theater as you can. When you're mixing it with a salesperson, you'll earn a little more respect if you can talk home theater at their level. And let me tell you, more chance of getting a better deal.

One of the problems you run into when you're on a budget and not really up to speed with the home theater language you could put yourself at the mercy of a savvy salesperson. s home theater equipment? The term home theater I would imagine conjures up some pretty amazing images in people's minds and it might be this very reason that people could be holding back and joining the home theater revolution.

Explaining it further... a fully functioning home theater in most people's minds would be an area of a house dedicated just for visual entertainment purposes. The problem is that assumptions are made about the cost of such a venture and I guess this is a stumbling block for many consumers.

But what if I was to tell you a fully functioning home theater could just comprise a television and a DVD player. It's true. Home theater is just an attractive term used mainly for marketing purposes and in reality, it's really a place where you can sit down and watch some TV.

Unless you can afford it right away, there's no need to jump in head first and purchase all the bells and whistles. I liken setting up a home theater the same as working on a project. Taking it one step at a time. First the television, then the DVD player, the projection unit, the furniture and so on. Home theater equipment comes in many shapes and sizes and if cost is a drawback for you, why not take the patient approach and build your entertainment area gradually. Let's take a look at television and sound.

The All Important Television

It’s possible to create a great home theater without having HDTV, but with the price of them dramatically dropping, it’s the best way to go. HDTV simply offers the best in crystal clear performance which will enable you to have top of the line home theater equipment.

However, if an HDTV is not in the budget a big screen television will do the trick until you are ready to invest in something of higher quality. But using home theater components for televisions that are not big screens or of higher quality doesn’t necessarily mean your home theater won’t offer you plenty of quality entertainment.

Enhancing Your Experience With Surround

Having surround sound as part of the home theater equipment you use helps to make the experience real. Not only do you need a subwoofer for this, but using speakers to surround your home theater area will portray a true theater experience.

Not only will your home theater equipment thrive from having a true surround sound, but it will be something you can use for many years to come without worrying about having to upgrade for the most part. You'll be surprised at just how affordable surround sound can really be.

The attraction of home theater equipment certainly enhances your viewing experience. Once you have the basics in place, then start to add the accessories. It's not a race. Be prudent with your choice and shop around. Stick within your budget and within time, you can own the "bragging right" when it comes to showing off your entertainment center to your buddies.

Swivel Tilt http://hometheaterinfoline.com/swivel-tilt/ http://hometheaterinfoline.com/swivel-tilt/#comments Tue, 19 Jan 2010 09:06:39 +0000 HomeTheaterInfoLine http://hometheaterinfoline.com/swivel-tilt/ What's the BEST WALL MOUNT for a 50" flatscreen? (I'm buying the Pioneer Kuro Pro-111)?

I want a good quality wall mount. Most of all, I want one that is closest to the wall. I don't want the tv to stick out too much. I don't necessarily need a tilting or swivel...although may be nice. Thanks!

the best is a Sanus VMPL250b VisionMount Low Profile Wall Mount

(1.25" from wall) - for 30" to 50" Flat Panel Plasma & LCD TVs - Black

You can adjust even the largest flat panel TV with just the gentle push of your finger. That's because the ingenious engineering behind the Virtual Axis balances the TV's weight on itself, so very little effort is required to move it. And the SmoothLock Swivel system uses tapered bearings to provide stronger, smoother pivot points. Each time you move your TV or Computer Monitor it'll stay exactly where you put it.The Sanus VisionMount VMPL250b is a high quality, durable mount with powder coat finish you can be proud to hang your flat panel television on. Of course, it is also great for today's flat panel computer monitors. Sanus mounts are constructed of heavy-gauge steel and extruded aluminum to securely hold flat panel TVs weighing as much as 130 lbs. The fact that you can have real fingertip movement with a TV that heavy is a testament to the excellence of Sanus engineering.

Anybody that is starting a home theater generally goes for the best technology that they can afford. Either they just want to see what all the fuss is about the latest gadgets or they have been convinced by a salesperson that this technology is a must have as all the others will be redundant in 6 months. This article will examine the merits of CRT technology vs LCD technology when it comes to buying your next television or display system. It will ask : do you really need the latest technology when it comes to home theater display systems ?

CRT or cathode ray tube is the old standard for televisions. The principle behind it is a vacuum tube that consists of an electron gun that is directed towards a screen coated in phosphor. The electron gun fires electrons at the screen causing the phosphor to heat up. This action causes colors on the screen which are used to produce an image that you watch.

LCD or liquid crystal display is a large amount of tiny liquid crystals that are held between two electrodes. When a charge is passed from one electrode to the other via the liquid crystals they react to the charge. This reaction causes light to be emitted which creates an image that you watch.

The first thing that you will immediately notice about CRT TV's are that they are far cheaper than LCD TV's or any other latest technology. This is so for two reasons. The first is that the new technology has cost a lot of money to develop so the makers of these televisions have to charge a premium. This price will drop over time. The other reason is that a lot of marketing has gone into the new technologies so retailers are finding it hard to move CRT TV's. The bottom line if budget is a factor is that CRT is still the way to go.

Another thing About CRT's is that they are large and bulky. They need to be to fit in the vacuum tube. This means you need plenty of space to put them in. One of the majors benefits of LCD technology is that the television is a flat panel. It can be placed on a wall are does not take up space. If you have a small apartment or house then this might be a consideration.

CRT TV's have a wider viewing angle than LCD. Thus if you are off center with an LCD the vision might be distorted. Not so with CRT.

LCD TV's have excellent resolution. Whereas a CRT TV might have a resolution of 480, LCD can have up to 1080. They will also use the progressive scanning method as opposed to interlacing giving a more fluid image.

CRT technology has a better contrast ratio than LCD. This means there will be more distinction between the blacks images on the screen. Again, this will make things stand out better in dark movies.

LCD technology has a greater range of colors giving a vibrant picture as opposed to CRT.

Clearly LCD are the latest technology. More money will be put into improving the deficiencies of the technology so it will improve over time. The price will also drop. If, however, you are on a budget and you do not plan to view HDTV in the near future you can't go past the low prices of good quality CRT televisions.

Certain home improvements will increase the value of your home by more than the original investment. We know this is often the case with new bathrooms and new kitchens, but what if you would like a home theater? How do you know what other improvements add value?

In certain areas, and for certain people, going out to public places in the evening presents hazards. This may be one reason why home entertainment centers are becoming more popular. A harsh winter climate is another and an avid sports fan in the family is a third! Another factor to add in nowadays, is that a large percentage of the realty buying population are baby boomers, who may be more inclined to sit indoors and watch a large screen TV!

In choosing to have a home theater, one of your rooms will be literally given up. The decor in an average sized room will be unnoticed once you have a giant screen and speakers dominating the space. Also, the extra amount of seating usually detracts from the room's appeal from a realty point of view.

For these reasons you will need to have a room dedicated only to the home theater, and hopefully, still have a rec room or den available. If this can be accommodated, then the home theater could well increase your real estate value.

Of course, not all homes can spare this much room. If this is the scenario then there is the possibility of concealing the home theater unless it is in use.

This can be done by use of cleverly designed cabinets. For some systems the cabinets would have to be very big. This may require screening off one end of the room with large door fronts that appear to be room dividers. Another way would be to build a large closet-effect cabinet. This will reduce clutter when the large screen is not in use. However, sufficient room must be allowed so that the air can circulate around the equipment when not in use.

Several factors must be taken into account when choosing a system and evaluating a room for it. If your room is fairly large you may require acoustic enhancement which could mean redecorating the ceiling, walls and floor. Acoustics (and sight lines for that matter) must be considered not only for the back of the room, but also out to the sides.

Along with this comes choosing the speaker size and the location, for instance, do you want free standing speakers or built in ones? You may also want to consider heavy duty wiring.

You will want to choose the size of the screen, remembering that too big is as bad as too small. Calculate how far you will be sitting from the screen and take the manufacturer's advice. If you are too close to a large screen you will always see certain distortions that are missed at a distance further away. This is also the time to decide if you want to consider buying a wall mounted swivel for your screen.

Part of the professionalism of a home theater is the lighting and this includes light-proof drapes. Remote control lighting is great, so that the whole audience - including you - can be seated as the lights go down!

Finally you will have to think about decor, shelving for all your DVD's, some sort of end table/coffee table placement and of course lots of seats. The norm is for two large sofas on each side wall and three or four armchairs, at the end of the room. This will allow for ten people.

With regard to increasing the property, home theaters is a pull that may increase the numbers of home- viewers but may only add value to your home for the right buyer (unlike say, a garage which increases the value for almost every buyer.)

One of the obvious ways to hedge your bets here is to choose home theater equipment that is easy to dismantle and therefore can be moved into your next home. If you do plan to do this you will need to ensure that the technology is adaptable. You will also be well advised not to buy your equipment too big, as the next home is an unknown factor.

Is it possable to install a cathedral ceiling in an existing home w/ 2x6 rafters(the roof is 4/12 )?

What I would like to do is raise the ceiling in my family room by building a bulk head about 24" from each wall and relocating the ceiling joist to follow the roof pitch. I don't know if it is possable w/ 2x6 rafters or how to frame it to hold weight and not compromise structual integrity of the roof. The room is 15x13, the roof is 2x6 joists, 4/12 pitch, and added on to the back of the house. I am in the trades just have very little knowledge about roof/house raming.

Yes it would be possible but could require considerable structural changes - it's really something that you'd need to get an architect, structural engineer or surveyor to advise on after inspecting the property.

One of the problems you may encounter is that in a domed roof structure the weight is distrubuted both downwards and outwards in respect of the walls and the existing walls may not have the integrity to take both the vertical and horizontal stresses. Typically in churches and cathederals the walls are butressed to prevent them being pushed outward.

With a conventional pitched roof it sits on the wallplates exerting a simple downward force on the walls, and as you know, you can put an incredible amount of loading onto a brick wall.

It sounds like quite an undertaking you're planning - good luck with it.

If you are looking for a flat screen TV one of the first things you have to consider is the type of technology that you want. The two options are Plasma or LCD. This article will examine the good and bad points of each technology and help you to make an informed choice when it comes to purchasing your new television set.

The principle behind Plasma technology is many tiny cells that are filled with xenon and neon gases. These cells are kept between two glass panels. When electric current is passed through the TV the gases in the cells are turned into plasma which in turn excites phosphors which emit light. The light is noted for it range and quality of colors.

LCD or liquid crystal display televisions work by varying the electric current between two electrodes using liquid crystals as a medium for passing the current. Liquid crystals are substances that can exist in the two states - liquid and solid crystal. By varying the voltage passed the liquid crystal colours can be modified and thus produce a picture.

LCD vs Plasma

The most important feature of a TV is the picture. In this respect most people agree that plasma produce better pictures for movies. This is because they have a higher black level ratio. This simply means there is more contrast between the blackest and whitest picture that a plasma screen can produce. This means pictures are clearer, especially in dark scenes.

Plasma screens tend to have a better viewing angle too. This means the picture will remain clear and undistorted at most angles of view from the televisions screen. This makes plasma screens more functional as home theater systems.

LCD televisions generally have more pixels per screen than a plasma equivalent. This means that the resolution of the picture will be better. This is more apparent with High Definition TV or movies. There will be more detail on the screen than a plasma.

Plasma TV's have often suffered from screen burn in. If a picture has been on the screen for a long period it will leave an after effect which is like a grayish outline of the picture or ghost of the original picture. This after picture will be permanently burned on the screen and can impact the quality of other images. LCD TV's do not suffer from this problem.

LCD televisions are also more efficient and will use less electricity to run than a plasma. LCD TV's are generally lighter so are easier to move.

The TV market is a huge and competitive industry so there are constant improvements in the technology. Many of the drawbacks of a particular technology are worked on and bettered each year. Plasma TV makers will tell you that burn in has been reduced in newer models. LCD TV makers will tell you that the black level ratio is increasing with each new model. Ultimately when it comes to plasma versus LCD, you need to get informed about some of the issues that differentiate the prices between the two rival technologies. In general, plasmas have been cheaper but this differential is slowly eroding.

HD Home theater question.?

Recent purchase of a Samsung HL-t6176s DLP television. And love it so far... 2 questions.

1. Component video vs. HDMI. I just got the HD digital cable receiver, and it came with component video and audio cables standard. My HDMI cables are in the mail so I hooked up the component video. Looks great. So now?? What is the advantage of HDMI? Other than cleaning up the number of cables behind your set. Is there an APPRECIABLE difference in video and audio between the 2. I am looking at a 1080i signal right now.

2. I see a spot on the screen. I have used the cleaning rag and it will not come off. I know it is not a black or white spot in the screen from a stuck mirror on the processor. It looks more like smudge. Anyone else have this? It appears to be inside.

1. Component is analog and HDMI is digital. HDMI will deliver slightly better quality video than component. Unless you have a surround sound receiver that supports HDMI audio and video, it is not going to clean up your cable situation. You would only be able to use HDMI for video only.

2. If you see an undefined spot, then this means there is dust or a fingerprint on a mirror, lens or DLP chip. There is nothing you can do to resolve this yourself. If it was a definitive spot like a square or rectangle, then this would be stuck mirrors. Either way, it seems like you need to get your TV serviced or exchanged.

i want to make a home theater system in my basement?

i need to know what are the different types of projectors there are in today's market
and what kind do i need to watch movies and play video games

and which ones are good in today's technology

how are the INFOCUS Projectors???
i personally think they are the best

Basically there are two main projector technologies. DLP and LCD, generally most people go for DLP and it seems to offer a better overall picture for the money. However, be warned... projectors do require a bit of maintenance, the Lamp has to be replaced about every 2 years(or between 1000-2000 hours) and lamps are pretty expensive, they usually run for about $350. The room also needs to be dark/dim(which I guess won't be an issue since it will be in your basement.)

But I would go with a DLP projector.

At first it seems like much fun having the cash to indulge and immerse yourself in high-definition video and surround sound, and then you realise there's more decision to be made than just placing a sleek TV panel and a bunch of speakers in the living room. Investing in a home theater system practically takes some planning in order to get the aesthetics right and make yourself comfortable with all the equipment around.

1. Most readers won't expect this, but first of all, you do need to get your immediate family's agreement to have a home theater right in their midst. Decide whether it's OK to install the system in the living room, or have a separate room dedicated for a most complete TV watching experience while disturbances to other members are minimized.

2. There are 2 main types of flat, high-definition TV: plasma and LCD. Plasma is made for larger size and is closer to 5 figures in pricing than LCD, which can cost as cheaply as less than a thousand. Plasma is the main choice for a TV in a home theater context since LCD TVs have a size limitation.

3. How could you do without a video source? That's the DVD player. Unless you are a discerning aficionado, you'll be spoilt for choice as more advanced technology and decreasing cost continue to impact the market. Almost all come with Dolby® Digital Surround sound (EX 6.1). Watch out for the blu-ray DVD and their players in the coming years.

4. As major TV and radio broadcasts are expected to 'port' into the digital format in the future, the broadcasted material will be encoded with surround sound instructions. A receiver takes advantage by accessing and decoding these instructions to give you superb sounds. Surround sound currently comes in the multi-channel formats of Dolby® Digital EX 6.1 or THX Surround EX™ 6.1, DTS, AC-3, etc.

Receivers can connect to most types of players and handle their respective media, including VCR or HiFi and the latest ones are designed to be forward-compatible with future standards and formats. Also, some DVD players have built-in receiver capabilities, and this is great for those looking to do more with less.

5. Speakers usually come in sets of 5: 3 in the front (left, right, center) and 2 at the back (left, right). Check with your dealer that the right speaker is placed for the right position because spoken dialogue and sound effects are handled differently. Note that "surround sound" means separate speakers can play different sounds at the same time. The subwoofer is a different animal as it's in charge of processing low frequency sounds which gives you "deep boom-boom bass". It adds an unexpected dimension to a movie which you would not have 'heard' otherwise.

6. Get the right cables; that means good quality ones. Having the latest equipment is pointless if lousy cables are used for connection as they naturally degrade whatever electrical signals that come through them.

7. Check how you can make your home theater lightning-proof or safe against power surges. You can safeguard your equipment once you take certain precautions. Ask for professional advice.

These are just general guidelines for you to refer, but you can take it from here to build your further interest in home theater equipment or home electronics. If possible, ask for a test at your dealership to get yourself familiarized with the quality you desire. Ask your dealer to help define a proper checklist of things you are looking for to gain clarity. The more ticks you can make on paper, the clearer your mind gets.

Please help me hook up my new TV, DVD/VCR?

Here's what I have:
A new TV
A DVD/VCR combo
I do not have cable/satellite Just a roof mount antenna

I want to be able to record television programs so I know I have to run the antenna coax through my DVD/VCR first but then what?
If I put the TV on "video 2" I can change channels through my DVD/VCR but don't get the digital channels, just the analogs.

Can someone please explain to me how to set this all up? Maybe its not as easy as I'm hoping.....

After Feb 2009, there will be no more analog channels, so connecting the VCR does not buy you much.

Time to start thinking about buying a DVD recorder with a hard drive and a Digital tuner.

If your TV has a Video out (rare this days, but possible), connect that to the VCR.

If you really want to feel the excitement of watching a movie in your own home, then you have to get a surround sound system.

You may already have the big screen in your room, but if you are not able to hear the soundtrack at its best, then you're missing out on half the fun!

However, many people feel that installing a surround sound system is too difficult - and that it's too complicated for them to hook up.

Well, it's not that difficult - follow these points to understand what you need to get your own surround sound set up.

1. Decide on the surround sound configuration you want.

Most modern DVDs come with a 5.1 surround soundtrack - so a 5.1 speaker setup is the most common speaker system that people have. This system has six speakers - a center speaker, front left and right, surround left and right and a subwoofer (for the bass). However, other common configrations are 7.1 and 7.2 surround sound speaker systems.

2. Buy an AV receiver/amplifier and speaker package - or a home theater in-a-box system.

The AV receiver is the amplifier for your speakers - and the processor for the 5.1 surround soundtrack. You will have to buy a separate 5.1 speaker package to connect to the surround sound receiver - and probably the speaker cable too. The main advantage of an AV receiver is that you can connect many different external devices to it - such as DVD players, Blu-ray players, cable TV boxes, DVD recorders etc.

A home theater in-a-box system (HTiB) will come with the amplifier, speakers and all the cabling in one package - and will often have a built-in DVD/Blu-ray player too. However, there is often limited scope for connecting other devices to this type of system.

3. Connect the system together.

  • Connect the speakers to the speaker outputs on the AV receiver using the speaker cables. Make sure you connect the center speaker to the center speaker output, the front left speaker to the front left speaker output etc.
  • Connect the HDMI output of your DVD player to the first HDMI input on the receiver. This will send the DVD picture and the sound to the receiver.
  • Connect the HDMI output port on the AV receiver to the first (maybe only) HDMI connection on your TV. The AV receiver will use this to send the picture to the TV screen.
  • Run the automatic speaker setup for the AV receiver (most have this). This will send a test signal around your speakers and set a good balance.

4. Play the movie!

5. How it all works

  • When you press play on the DVD player, the video and audio signals are sent to the AV receiver down the HDMI cable - make sure you select the correct input on the AV receiver and it will receive the signal.
  • The AV receiver then sends the picture to the TV - make sure you select the correct input on the TV (the TV may switch to the correct input when it gets the signal).
  • The AV receiver also sends the audio to the speakers. It should automatically receive the 5.1 mix on the DVD and send it out to the speaker system in surround sound.

Summary

So there we have it, a quick checklist of what you need to buy to get a surround sound system in you home - and how you connect everything together. If you need more detailed information on this process, then follow the links below.

Have fun!

How do I hook up my Mac Book to an LCD projector?

I have the mini DVI to VGA cord, but I think it's not the correct cord.

Maybe with a mini dvi to dvi adapter.
